‘You are not in North Korea’: Pelosi blasts Trump over refusal to promise peaceful transfer of power

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi reminded President Trump on Thursday that he’s “not in North Korea” after he refused to promise that there’ll be a peaceful transition of power in the event he loses the election in November.

In a press conference on Capitol Hill, Pelosi called Trump’s dithering on the fundamental issue “very sad” and noted that he often offers praise for the authoritarian leaders of North Korea, Russia and Turkey.

“But I remind him: You are not in North Korea, you are not in Turkey, you are not in Russia, Mr. President, and, by the way, you are not in Saudi Arabia,” she said. “You are in the United States of America. It is a democracy.”

She added: “So why don’t you just try for a moment to honor our oath of office to the Constitution of the United States.”

Trump was asked during a briefing at the White House on Wednesday evening to pledge that there will be a peaceful transfer of power if Joe Biden wins the Nov. 3 election.

“We’re going to have to see what happens,” Trump said.

The president cited his baseless claim that expanded access to mail-in voting will result in widespread fraud beneficial to Democrats in this election.

“You know that I’ve been complaining very strongly about the ballots, and the ballots are a disaster,” he said.

“Get rid of the ballots and you’ll have a very peaceful …,” he continued before catching himself. “There won’t be a transfer, frankly. There will be a continuation.”

There’s no evidence for Trump’s claims about mail-in ballots. States governed by both Republicans and Democrats have expanded access to the method in order to make voting safer amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The peaceful transfer of power has been an elementary tenet of American democracy for centuries, and Trump’s refusal to commit to it even drew some rare rebuke from Republicans on Thursday.

“The winner of the November 3rd election will be inaugurated on January 20th,” Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said in a tweet. “There will be an orderly transition just as there has been every four years since 1792.”
