Williams, Salazar endorse NYC Councilman Antonio Reynoso for Brooklyn BP

City Councilman Antonio Reynoso racked up a slew of endorsements from Brooklyn progressives for his borough president run.

NYC Public Advocate Jumaane Williams, New York State Sen. Julia Salazar and others voiced their support of their fellow Dem Reynoso on Wednesday.

“We’ve fought together to address systemic racism and to demand income-targeted, affordable housing, better policing and safer streets,” Williams said in a statement. “I’m excited to stand with him as he runs to make Brooklyn the absolute best it can be.”

Salazar nodded to Reynoso’s work as chairman of the Council’s Sanitation Committee, which includes the establishment of distinct zones for commercial waste haulers, viewed as a significant reform of the sector.

“Antonio has worked relentlessly to identify the problems facing our communities and to take action to resolve them — from making our shared streets in Brooklyn safer for all of us, to fighting for climate justice and waste equity in our neighborhoods,” stated Salazar, a first-term senator.

Reynoso won the Council primary against disgraced former Assemblyman Vito Lopez in 2013. He then went on to win the general election.

A strong critic of NYPD practices during recent protests, the term-limited councilman voted against this year’s budget, saying it didn’t go far enough to transform the police.

“Whether it’s police reform, environmental justice, housing affordability or supporting local businesses, Antonio is a tenacious fighter for the issues that affect the most vulnerable in our city,” said his staffer Kristina Naplatarski, who recently won a contest to become a district leader.

Assemblywoman Maritza Davila also endorsed Reynoso.

While borough president is a largely ceremonial job, there is stiff competition for the 2021 contest. Councilman Robert Cornegy is in the race and NYC First Lady Chirlane McCray is believed to be mulling a run.
